Lu Xun (Zhou Shuren) is considered the father of modern Chinese literature. His short stories ('A Madman's Diary,' 'The True Story of Ah Q') used vernacular Chinese to attack feudal culture, Confucian hypocrisy, and Chinese passivity with savage irony.
