Homer is the legendary author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, the two foundational epics of Western literature. Almost nothing is known about him with certainty—even whether he was a single person remains debated in what scholars call the 'Homeric Question.' Ancient tradition held he was a blind wandering bard from Ionia, possibly Smyrna or Chios, who composed orally in the tradition of traveling poets.

What is certain is that the Iliad and Odyssey are works of staggering sophistication—psychologically complex, morally ambiguous, and structurally brilliant. They established the epic tradition and gave Western civilization its first great literary characters: the wrathful Achilles, the cunning Odysseus, the noble Hector, and the faithful Penelope. Every epic, novel, and war story since exists in dialogue with Homer.
