Murakami ran a jazz bar in Tokyo before becoming a novelist at 29—the inspiration struck while watching a baseball game. He is a marathon runner who runs every day, a jazz obsessive, and a cat lover. His novels blend realism with surreal elements—talking cats, parallel worlds, vanishing people.
His style owes more to Chandler and Vonnegut than traditional Japanese fiction. He translates American authors into Japanese. He is private, lives partly in the US, and is both beloved by global readers and sometimes dismissed by Japanese literary critics. He is a perennial Nobel candidate.
