Samuel Morse
1791–1872 · American · Antebellum America / Civil War Era
Known for: Developed the electric telegraph and Morse code, revolutionizing communication
Samuel Morse was a painter who invented the telegraph because his wife died while he was away and the message reached him too late—she had already been buried by the time he learned she was ill. That grief drove him to build the first practical system for near-instant long-distance communication.
His first telegraph message, 'What hath God wrought,' sent in 1844, launched the information age. The telegraph was the 'Victorian internet'—the first technology to enable near-instantaneous communication across distances. Morse code remained in use for over 150 years.
