Joseph Fourier's mathematical analysis of heat flow introduced the Fourier series—representing any function as a sum of sine waves. This is one of the most powerful tools in all of mathematics and engineering, essential to everything from signal processing to medical imaging.
He also served Napoleon in Egypt as a governor and was among the first to describe the greenhouse effect.
