Carl Linnaeus invented the system we still use to name every living thing on Earth—genus and species, like Homo sapiens (which he named). He classified thousands of plants and animals with obsessive precision, organizing the chaos of nature into a coherent framework. He declared 'God created, Linnaeus organized'—and he wasn't entirely joking.
He was a charismatic teacher who led botanical expeditions across Scandinavia and sent students around the world to collect specimens. He even named a noxious weed after a botanical rival—the ultimate scientific insult.
