Benjamin Franklin flew a kite in a thunderstorm and proved that lightning is electricity—an experiment that could have killed him and that nobody should ever repeat. He invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, and swim fins. He refused to patent any of his inventions, believing they should benefit everyone.
He was entirely self-educated, becoming one of the most famous men in the world through sheer talent and charm. He was also a key Founding Father, diplomat, and printer—but his scientific contributions alone would have made him immortal.
