Amedeo Avogadro was a lawyer turned physicist whose hypothesis was ignored for 50 years. He proposed that equal volumes of gases at the same conditions contain equal numbers of particles—a radical idea that unified chemistry and physics.

His number—6.022 x 10^23—became one of the fundamental constants of science, but he never lived to see his work appreciated.
