Alfred Nobel invented dynamite, held 355 patents, spoke five languages, wrote poetry, and then read his own premature obituary—which called him 'the merchant of death'—and decided to leave his fortune to fund the world's most prestigious prizes. That's one of history's greatest redemption arcs.
He made nitroglycerin safer by absorbing it into diatomaceous earth. His brother Ludvig died in 1888, and a French newspaper accidentally published Alfred's obituary instead, giving him the rare opportunity to see how the world would remember him.
