Ada Lovelace

Ada Lovelace was the daughter of Lord Byron (whom she never met) and mathematician Annabella Milbanke. She combined her father's imagination with her mother's mathematical rigor—calling her approach 'poetical science.' She saw the potential of Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine far beyond mere calculation, envisioning that machines could manipulate symbols and even compose music.

Her notes on the Analytical Engine contain what is recognized as the first computer algorithm. She died of uterine cancer at 36, and her vision of computing wasn't realized for another century. The Ada programming language is named after her.
