Augustine of Hippo was a North African theologian whose Confessions (history's first autobiography) and The City of God fundamentally shaped Western Christianity, philosophy, and the concept of the self. Born to a pagan father and Christian mother (Monica), he spent his youth in intellectual and sexual pursuit before converting to Christianity at 32, eventually becoming Bishop of Hippo in modern Algeria.

His theological innovations — original sin, predestination, just war theory, and the idea that human history is a cosmic drama between the 'City of God' and the 'City of Man' — dominated Western thought for over a millennium. Both Catholics and Protestants claim him. His famous prayer, 'Lord, give me chastity — but not yet,' captures his genius for honest self-examination.
