Ataturk (meaning 'Father of the Turks') led Turkey's war of independence after WWI, abolished the Ottoman sultanate, and created a secular republic. He replaced Arabic script with Latin letters, gave women the vote (before France!), banned the fez, and forcibly modernized every aspect of Turkish life.
