Sitting Bull (Tatanka Iyotake)
~1831–1890 · Hunkpapa Lakota (Grand River, South Dakota) · American Indian Wars, Late 19th Century
Known for: Lakota chief who defeated Custer at Little Bighorn and became the most famous Native American leader in the world
Sitting Bull was the principal chief who unified the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho for the Battle of the Little Bighorn (1876), where his coalition annihilated Custer's 7th Cavalry—the most famous Native American military victory in history.
He fled to Canada, returned, toured with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, and was killed by reservation police in 1890 during the Ghost Dance movement. His murder was part of the US government's systematic destruction of Lakota resistance.
