Selim doubled the Ottoman Empire in just 8 years, conquering the Mamluk Sultanate (Egypt and Syria), the Arabian holy cities, and declaring himself Caliph of all Muslims. He was called 'the Grim' for his ruthlessness—he reportedly killed several of his own brothers and had every vizier he appointed executed.
