Queen Victoria reigned for 63 years as the British Empire expanded to cover a quarter of the world's landmass. The 'Victorian era' defined an age of industrialization, imperial expansion, moral conservatism, and scientific advancement. She was empress of India and grandmother to most of Europe's royalty.
She married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and they had nine children. Albert's death in 1861 devastated her—she wore black for the remaining 40 years of her life and largely withdrew from public view, earning criticism as 'the widow of Windsor.' She was revered as a symbol of stability and propriety.
