Philip II ruled the Spanish Empire at its zenith—Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal, most of Italy, the Philippines (named after him), and vast territories in the Americas. He was the most powerful monarch in Europe and the champion of Catholic Counter-Reformation.
His signature failure was the Spanish Armada (1588), destroyed by storms and English naval tactics. He built El Escorial—monastery, palace, library, and tomb—as his grim, magnificent headquarters. He ruled through paperwork, reading and annotating every document personally.
