Mandela was an anti-apartheid revolutionary who spent 27 years in prison (18 on Robben Island) and emerged without bitterness to negotiate the peaceful end of apartheid and become South Africa's first Black president (1994-1999).
He was originally a militant who co-founded Umkhonto we Sizwe (the ANC's armed wing) before his imprisonment. Prison transformed him from a fighter into a negotiator. His decision to pursue reconciliation rather than revenge—embodied in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission—prevented a civil war and became a model for post-conflict societies worldwide.
