Nader Shah rose from tribal warrior to emperor of Persia, defeating the Ottomans, Mughals, and Uzbeks. His sack of Delhi in 1739 was the richest plunder in history—he took the Peacock Throne, the Koh-i-Noor diamond, and so much treasure it took 700 elephants to carry it home. He abolished the jizya tax and tried to unite Sunni and Shia Islam.
