Maria Theresa inherited the Habsburg domains at 23 and immediately faced invasion by Frederick the Great (who seized Silesia) and most of Europe (War of Austrian Succession). She fought them all, lost Silesia, but kept everything else through sheer determination and diplomatic skill.
She reformed taxation, education, and the military, and bore 16 children (including Marie Antoinette). She was the most powerful woman in 18th-century Europe and governed while pregnant for most of her reign.
