Nkrumah led Ghana to independence from Britain in 1957—the first sub-Saharan African country to decolonize—and became the spiritual leader of the Pan-African movement. He was a visionary who dreamed of a 'United States of Africa' and invested in education, infrastructure, and industrialization.
He became increasingly authoritarian—declaring himself president for life, suppressing opposition, and building a personality cult. He was overthrown in a CIA-backed military coup in 1966 and died in exile in Guinea.
