Nyerere led Tanzania to independence and served as president for 24 years. He championed Ujamaa (African socialism)—collective farming and self-reliance. The economic results were mixed (Tanzania remained poor), but he built national unity, promoted Swahili, and maintained peace in a region of coups and civil wars.
He voluntarily stepped down in 1985—one of the few African leaders to do so. He translated Shakespeare into Swahili.
