Tito led the Yugoslav Partisans against the Nazis, then unified six republics into Yugoslavia and kept it together for 35 years through sheer charisma and strategic repression. He broke with Stalin in 1948 (the Tito-Stalin split) and co-founded the Non-Aligned Movement.
After his death in 1980, Yugoslavia disintegrated into the bloodiest European wars since WWII.
