Stalin transformed the Soviet Union from an agricultural backwater into a nuclear superpower through forced industrialization, collectivization, and mass terror. The human cost was staggering: the Ukrainian famine (Holodomor, 3-5 million dead), the Great Purge (750,000 executed), the Gulag system (18 million passed through), and World War II losses (27 million Soviet dead).
He defeated Nazi Germany through ruthless mobilization, then imposed Communist regimes across Eastern Europe. He died in 1953 after suffering a stroke—his guards were too terrified to enter his room for hours, possibly costing him his life.
