James was king of Scotland from age 1 (his mother Mary Queen of Scots was deposed) and inherited the English throne from Elizabeth I in 1603. He commissioned the King James Bible (the most influential English text ever), survived the Gunpowder Plot, and established the first permanent English colonies in America (Jamestown).
