Henry IV ended France's devastating Wars of Religion by converting from Protestantism to Catholicism ('Paris is worth a Mass') and issuing the Edict of Nantes granting religious tolerance. He rebuilt France, promoted agriculture ('a chicken in every pot'), and was beloved by the French people. He was assassinated by a Catholic fanatic in 1610.
