Gustav III was a cultured king who founded the Swedish Academy (which awards the Nobel Prize in Literature), the Royal Opera, and the Royal Dramatic Theatre. He staged a coup against his own parliament, abolished torture, and promoted religious tolerance. He was assassinated at a masked ball in 1792—the event inspired Verdi's opera Un ballo in maschera.
