Aurangzeb imprisoned his father Shah Jahan, killed his brothers, and expanded the Mughal Empire to its maximum extent. He reversed Akbar's religious tolerance, reimposed the jizya tax on Hindus, and destroyed Hindu temples.
His 49-year reign was militarily successful but politically ruinous—his intolerance provoked revolts that fragmented the empire after his death.
