~1502–1533 · Inca (Quito / Cajamarca) · Inca Empire, Spanish Conquest
Known for: Last Inca emperor—captured by Pizarro and executed despite paying the largest ransom in history
Atahualpa had just won a civil war against his brother Huascar when Pizarro arrived with 168 Spaniards. At Cajamarca, Pizarro ambushed and captured Atahualpa, who offered to fill a room with gold and two rooms with silver as ransom. Pizarro took the treasure and executed him anyway.
