Jackson was the first 'common man' president—a frontier fighter, Indian fighter, and war hero who killed men in duels, survived an assassination attempt, and smashed the national bank. He expanded voting rights to all white men (removing property requirements) while forcibly removing 60,000 Native Americans from their lands (the Trail of Tears).

He was the most polarizing president before Lincoln. His supporters saw a champion of the people; his opponents (who called themselves 'Whigs' after the English anti-monarchist party) saw a tyrant. He was both.
