Theodora was the daughter of a bear-keeper at the Constantinople hippodrome who became an actress (a profession synonymous with prostitution in Byzantium), then a courtesan, then a wool spinner—before catching the eye of the future Emperor Justinian, who changed the law to marry her.

As empress, she was Justinian's most trusted advisor and effective co-ruler. She championed women's rights (banning forced prostitution, expanding divorce rights, giving women property rights in marriage), protected religious dissidents, and most famously convinced Justinian to stay and fight during the Nika riots rather than flee: 'Purple is the noblest shroud.'

She died of cancer at approximately 48. Justinian never recovered and spent his remaining 17 years trying to implement her wishes. She's one of history's greatest rags-to-riches stories.
