Shaka transformed the Zulu from a minor clan of roughly 1,500 people into a military empire of over 250,000. He revolutionized African warfare—replacing the traditional long throwing spear with the short stabbing iklwa, introducing the 'bull horn' formation (encircling pincer movement), and imposing Spartan-level discipline on his warriors.

He reorganized Zulu society around military lines—age-based regiments (amabutho) that lived together, trained together, and could not marry without the king's permission. He was ruthless: entire clans that resisted were exterminated; the period of upheaval he triggered (the Mfecane/Difaqane) displaced millions across southern Africa.

He was assassinated by his half-brothers Dingane and Mhlangana in 1828, reportedly asking as he died: 'You think you will rule this land when I am dead? The white people are already here.'
