Sejong the Great
1397–1450 · Korean (Hanyang/Seoul) · Joseon Dynasty, Medieval Korea
Known for: Created the Korean alphabet (Hangul)—one of the most scientifically designed writing systems ever invented
Sejong is Korea's most revered historical figure. His greatest achievement was the creation of Hangul—the Korean alphabet—in 1443. Unlike most writing systems that evolved organically, Hangul was deliberately designed to be logical, learnable, and accessible to common people. It can be learned in a day.
He also reformed agriculture, promoted science and technology (inventing the rain gauge, sundials, and water clocks), expanded Korean territory northward, and sponsored one of history's great cultural renaissances.
