Scipio Africanus
236–183 BCE · Roman · Roman Republic, Second Punic War
Known for: Defeated Hannibal at Zama—the general who saved Rome from its greatest enemy
Scipio was the Roman general who did what no one else could: defeat Hannibal. After Hannibal ravaged Italy for 15 years, Scipio took the war to Africa, forcing Hannibal to leave Italy and face him at the Battle of Zama (202 BCE)—where Scipio won decisively.
He conquered Spain as a 25-year-old general, won every battle he fought, and earned the honorific 'Africanus.' He was magnanimous to defeated enemies and admired even by his opponents.
