Mansa Musa ruled the Mali Empire at the height of its power, controlling the gold and salt trade routes that made West Africa the economic engine of the medieval world. His personal wealth is estimated at $400+ billion in modern terms—making him the richest individual in human history.

His 1324 pilgrimage to Mecca was the most spectacular display of wealth the world had ever seen. He traveled with a caravan of 60,000 people, including 12,000 slaves each carrying 4 pounds of gold. He gave away so much gold in Cairo and Medina that he crashed the local gold market for over a decade.

He built the University of Sankore in Timbuktu into one of the world's great centers of learning, with a library collection rivaling contemporary European universities. He commissioned the Djinguereber Mosque and turned Timbuktu into a global center of Islamic scholarship.
