Jayavarman VII rebuilt the Khmer Empire after the Cham sacking of Angkor. He constructed Angkor Thom (the walled capital), the Bayon (with its iconic face towers), Ta Prohm, and Preah Khan. He was a devout Buddhist who built hospitals across his kingdom—a rare example of ancient social welfare.
