Huayna Capac expanded the Inca Empire to its maximum extent, pushing into modern-day Ecuador and Colombia. He built roads, conquered the Chimu kingdom, and established Quito as a second capital. His death (probably from European smallpox, which traveled ahead of the conquistadors) triggered a civil war between his sons Atahualpa and Huascar that fatally weakened the empire just before Pizarro arrived.
