Harun al-Rashid presided over the Abbasid Caliphate at the peak of its power and culture. Baghdad under his rule was the largest, wealthiest, and most intellectually vibrant city in the world—center of the Islamic Golden Age in science, philosophy, medicine, and literature.
He exchanged embassies with Charlemagne, founded the House of Wisdom (Bayt al-Hikma) for translation and scholarship, and his court's splendor inspired the Thousand and One Nights (Arabian Nights), in which he appears as a character wandering Baghdad in disguise.
