Hadrian
76–138 CE · Roman (Italica, Hispania) · Roman Empire, Five Good Emperors
Known for: Built Hadrian's Wall, consolidated the empire, and was devastated by the death of his beloved Antinous
Hadrian reversed Trajan's expansion and focused on consolidating Rome's borders—building Hadrian's Wall in Britain, the most famous Roman frontier. He traveled the empire more extensively than any other emperor, personally inspecting every province.
He was a gifted architect (he designed the Pantheon's current form), a poet, a philosopher, and a lover of Greek culture. His reign was peaceful and prosperous. His great personal tragedy was the drowning of his beloved companion Antinous in the Nile.
