Garibaldi was a guerrilla commander who conquered the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies with only 1,000 red-shirted volunteers (the 'Expedition of the Thousand'), then handed his conquests to King Victor Emmanuel II—unifying Italy. He was offered the command of Union forces in the American Civil War by Lincoln but declined.
