Elizabeth I inherited a bankrupt, religiously divided England and turned it into a European superpower. She was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn (who was beheaded when Elizabeth was two), and she survived imprisonment under her half-sister Mary I to reach the throne at 25.

She established the Elizabethan Religious Settlement (a moderate Protestantism), defeated the Spanish Armada (1588), presided over the golden age of English literature (Shakespeare, Marlowe, Spenser), and expanded English naval power and trade. She never married, using her eligibility as a diplomatic tool for decades.

She was the most successful female ruler in European history, governing through intelligence, charisma, and an extraordinary ability to manage competing factions. She died at 69 after 45 years on the throne.
