Diocletian rose from nothing (son of a freedman) to become emperor and saved the Roman Empire from the Crisis of the Third Century. He created the Tetrarchy (four co-emperors), reformed taxation, reorganized the military, and persecuted Christians more severely than any emperor.
His most remarkable act: he voluntarily retired in 305 CE—the only Roman emperor to abdicate willingly—and spent his remaining years growing vegetables at his palace in Split (Croatia). When urged to return to power, he said: 'If you could show the cabbage I planted with my own hands, you would not dare suggest that.'
