Shams-e Tabrizi was a wandering Sufi mystic whose encounter with Rumi in Konya, Turkey in 1244 transformed both their lives. Their intense spiritual partnership (which lasted only 2-3 years) produced Rumi's greatest poetry. Shams disappeared — possibly murdered by jealous disciples.
