Confucius was born into a once-noble family that had fallen on hard times. He became the most influential teacher in Chinese history, developing a comprehensive ethical and political philosophy centered on ren (benevolence), li (ritual propriety), and filial piety. He spent years wandering from state to state trying to find a ruler who would implement his ideas — none did during his lifetime.

His teachings, compiled by disciples in the Analerta, became the foundation of Chinese governance, education, and social relations for over two millennia. The imperial examination system, which selected China's bureaucratic elite for 1,300 years, was based on mastery of Confucian texts. His influence extends across Korea, Japan, Vietnam, and the broader East Asian world.
