Boethius served as consul under the Ostrogothic king Theodoric until he was accused of treason, imprisoned, and executed. In prison he wrote The Consolation of Philosophy — a dialogue with Lady Philosophy about fate, fortune, and the nature of happiness — one of the most influential books of the Middle Ages.
