Vercingetorix was the chieftain who united the normally fractious Gallic tribes against Julius Caesar's invasion. He won the Battle of Gergovia (one of Caesar's few defeats), then was besieged at Alesia. Caesar built TWO ring fortifications—one around Alesia, one facing outward against a Gallic relief army—and won. Vercingetorix surrendered personally, was paraded in Caesar's triumph, and strangled in a Roman prison after six years.
