Trần Hưng Đạo was Vietnam's greatest military hero—a commander who defeated the Mongol Empire not once, not twice, but three times, when the rest of the world was falling to Mongol conquest. He combined guerrilla tactics with conventional warfare, using the Bạch Đằng River to destroy the Mongol fleet by planting iron-tipped wooden stakes underwater that impaled enemy ships at low tide.
He turned personal rivalry with the royal family into cooperation when the Mongol threat demanded it, putting nation above ego. His 'Proclamation to the Officers' is Vietnam's foundational patriotic document.
