Shivaji built the Maratha Empire from nothing, challenging the mighty Mughal Empire through guerrilla warfare in the Western Ghats mountains. He was crowned Chhatrapati (sovereign) and established a navy, an administration, and a military tradition that would eventually weaken the Mughals fatally.
He's a national hero in Maharashtra and one of India's most revered historical figures. His guerrilla tactics inspired resistance movements worldwide.
