Rani Lakshmibai was the Queen of Jhansi who became one of the most celebrated figures in Indian history by fighting the British East India Company during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. When the British tried to annex her kingdom under the Doctrine of Lapse, she declared: 'I shall not surrender my Jhansi.'
She was trained in martial arts, horsemanship, and swordsmanship from childhood. She rode into battle with her infant son strapped to her back and fought until she was killed. The British commander Sir Hugh Rose called her 'the most dangerous of all Indian leaders.' She died at 29, fighting.
