Mehmed II was the Ottoman Sultan who accomplished the feat that had eluded Muslim armies for 800 years: the conquest of Constantinople in 1453. He was only 21 years old. He built the largest cannons in the world, dragged ships overland to bypass the harbor chain, and personally led the final assault that ended the Byzantine Empire.

He was brilliant, multilingual (speaking six languages), and obsessively focused on Constantinople from childhood. After the conquest, he was remarkably magnanimous, preserving the city's Greek population and cultural institutions. He transformed Constantinople into Istanbul, the capital of an empire that would last until 1922.
