Maurice of Nassau was the Dutch stadtholder who transformed the ragtag Dutch rebel army into the most professional fighting force in Europe. He studied Roman military texts at Leiden University and applied classical principles to create standardized drill, specialized military engineering, and professional officer training—innovations that every European army adopted.
He was the intellectual architect of modern military organization. His reforms made the Dutch army the model for European warfare, and his siege techniques reduced fortress-taking to a mathematical science. He was more scholar than warrior, but his methods won wars.
